In the context of increasing environmental pollution caused by microplastics, there is the challenge of developing a precise and efficient method for identifying and analyzing microplastic particles. Conventional methods are usually inaccurate and have high error rates. Furthermore, there are no portable systems of high quality.

Solution

To tackle this problem, a comprehensive approach based on state-of-the-art technology was developed. new direction GmbH developed random forest classifiers to analyze the complete wavelength spectrum (935-1720 nm) of microplastics. These algorithms enable automatic identification of the chemical composition of microplastic particles based on near-infrared camera images. In addition, a library of over 20 microplastic reference materials and minerals was created. This serves as the basis for the development and validation of the AI algorithms and ensures that the results are precise and reliable.

Furthermore, a powerful user interface was developed to facilitate the analysis of the chemical information on microplastic particles. This ensures that even users without in-depth technical knowledge can use the technology effectively.

The realized solution is portable and can be used in any standing or flowing body of water.
